Hi, I’m Sarah. I was born and raised in Bradford and moved to Selby 14 years ago with my husband Martin, where we have settled with our clan of daughters — Niamh, Ava and Orlaith.
I was never a sporty child, but I found a love for circuit training and running at 16. It has been part of my life ever since—not competitively, but as a way to stay fit and healthy—and it’s something I’ve encouraged in my girls too.
My first introduction to Vale of York Athletic Community came through my eldest daughter Niamh’s interest in athletics. We came down to the club in autumn 2023 and have not looked back since, with all five of us now signed up as members. There aren’t many clubs where the whole family can get involved and enjoy the same activities together, but Vale of York is very much that kind of club.
All three girls now train, and two have competed in both the PECO XC and West Yorkshire Track and Field events. I’ve also taken part in the PECO XC and the York District Road Race League myself, and last year I even had a go at some track and field events—which I hope to continue.
Never did I imagine I would enjoy working with kids as much as I have while assisting the coaches on Monday nights and at the family fun day. I could easily sit on the sidelines and watch, but I’m genuinely inspired by Ian, Bev, Dave, Jenni and the rest of the coaching team, who give up their free time to offer children in our area access to a sport that isn’t always easy to engage with locally.
Last summer, I took the next step in my coaching journey and became a Athletics Coach Jumps, which has been a rewarding and exciting challenge as I continue to develop my skills and support the athletes.
Juggling the girls’ activities alongside a busy full‑time finance role in the NHS can be demanding and sometimes mentally exhausting, but the release I get from being part of the club—seeing the kids develop, thrive and smile—makes every moment worthwhile.
