How it works at Vale

The York and District Road Race League is the club’s main team competition on the road. It is a series of 10k races on Tuesday evenings through the spring and summer, hosted in turn by clubs around York, at places like Tadcaster, Pocklington, Easingwold, Knavesmire and Wistow.

There is no selection. The club shares the fixtures and members enter the ones they fancy. Team scoring then happens automatically from whoever turns up, so you are contributing simply by racing. Club colours are worn.

Because the league runs on Tuesday evenings in the summer, the Wednesday session at Bubwith softens off at that time of year, running as intervals through the winter and as something more sociable once the racing season is on.

Coaching is led by England Athletics licensed coaches who are Enhanced DBS checked.

Where the club races

One local league that we compete in as a team, and a Yorkshire wide series for older age groups.

Our main team competition

York and District Road Race League

Around seven 10k races a season, Tuesday evenings, hosted by clubs across the York area.

  • Scored individually by position, and by team
  • The first six men and first four women from each club count in each race
  • Individuals drop their two worst races, teams drop one
  • Age categories in ten year bands from 35 for women and 40 for men

Yorkshire Veterans

Two strands run by the Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association, both for athletes over 35 on the day.

  • The Grand Prix is multi terrain, up to ten races a year, five pounds a race
  • The championships cover 5 miles, 10k, 10 miles, half marathon, cross country, fell and road relays
  • You compete against your own age group rather than the whole field

Runners who already run

If you are doing parkrun and wondering what is next, a Tuesday evening 10k is the honest answer.

Over 35s

The vets series means racing your own age group, which is a good deal more satisfying than chasing 25 year olds.

Anyone who wants a team

Nobody is picked and nobody is dropped. You score by entering.
