One of our juniors, Reuben, took on the Great North Run Junior last weekend. It was his first time at an event of that scale. The Junior version is a 4km race through the heart of Newcastle and Gateshead, which takes place the day before the Great North Run Half Marathon.
He finished in 17:03, 10th in his age group and 40th overall. Here’s Reuben’s race report in his very own words.
I recently took part in the Great North Run Junior event, which was a 4km race, and it was a brilliant experience from start to finish. I finished the race in a time of 17 minutes and 3 seconds, which meant I came 10th overall in my age group. I was really pleased with my result, especially as there were lots of runners taking part, and it was great to see so many other children enjoying running.
It was much more than just a race and we had a really fun day at the Great North Run. Before my race, we watched the wheelchair races and the Under 8 races, which was really exciting and gave me a chance to see what the atmosphere was like before I ran. There were so many people there and the crowds made it feel like a really big event. When it was time for my race, I really enjoyed running with all the other children and trying to run my best time.
The best part for me was coming down the finish straight with all the crowds cheering. The noise and atmosphere made it really exciting and gave me an extra boost to keep going right to the finish. It was a brilliant feeling crossing the finish line and knowing I had given it my best effort. I really enjoyed the whole experience and would definitely recommend the Great North Run Junior to anyone who enjoys running or wants to have a go at a big running event. I had so much fun and would love to take part again in the future!
