Richard takes on the Great North Run for the MS Society

Update, 15 September: Richard finished the Great North Run in a brilliant 1:46, comfortably inside his sub-1:50 target and a new personal best. That also meant beating the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

Richard put the strong run down to the club’s hydration and heat strategy, small regular sips at every water station rather than big gulps, and a summer spent training in the warm. He wasn’t expecting the sunburn that came with it though. He also smashed his fundraising target, raising 153% of his goal for the MS Society.

Club member Richard Johnson took on this year’s Great North Run to raise money for the MS Society, a charity that means a great deal to him. Richard was diagnosed with MS in his late teens and has experienced first hand the impact the condition can have on people and families.

Having rediscovered running four years ago, Richard took on the Great North Run to combine a personal challenge with raising money for a cause close to his heart. The run fell on the same day as our own Vale of York Half, so while some of us raced closer to home, Richard lined up on Tyneside.
