Club running records: road, parkrun and distance bests

Will Haw, who compiled the club records, in his Northwood Cross Country shirt

Will Haw, our resident statto, has done the roads. Last summer he compiled our first full set of track and field club records. Here is the companion set: road, parkrun and distance bests, women’s and men’s, shortest to longest.

Two records with two names on them

Sam Gunning and Will Haw share the men’s 5K road record at 15:04. Two runners, one time, neither able to shake the other off the top of the list.

Until last month the men’s marathon record was shared too, at 2:59:15 by Dan Lloyd and Ian Martin, set three years apart on different continents. Dan took it outright at York in October with 2:55:46, so that one now has a single name on it. Sam and Will still have some sorting out to do.

Both 20 mile records came from the same morning

Beverley Horsfield and Ian Martin both ran the Spen 20 at Liversedge on 22 March 2026, and between them they are the only Vale of York members with a 20 mile time on record. Beverley ran 3:46:14 and Ian ran 2:22:12, second V55 on the day.

If you fancy taking one off them, the Spen 20 comes round again in March and it sits perfectly in a spring marathon build.

Some of these are there for the taking

Look at the two five mile records and the two ten mile records next to everything around them.

The women’s five mile record is 34:54, which is a shade under seven minute miling. Katie Adams has run 10K at 6:19 pace and a half marathon at 6:31 pace. If Katie turns up at a five mile race, that record changes hands. Katie’s 17:36 for 5K on the road would also take the parkrun record off Nicola Henderson by nearly two minutes, if she ever ran one.

The men’s ten mile record is 60:37, which is 6:04 miling, while Sam Gunning has run five miles at 5:25 pace and Harry Bromley a half marathon at 5:37. Dan Ley ran 1:09:43 at the Yorkshire Ten last month and that was not close, so this one is not falling by accident, but it is soft against the rest of the list.

That is not a criticism of anybody on the table. It just means there are club records sitting at distances we rarely race, and someone who picks the right event this winter can put their name on one.

Think something is missing or wrong?

This is a first set, so it will have gaps. There is nothing here yet for ultra distances or relays, and apart from the two 20 mile marks the list does not record the date and venue of each mark. Those are next.

If you have a performance for Vale of York that beats one of these, or an event we have not covered, send it in with the date, the meeting and where the result was published. Email Will Haw and we will update the list.

And if you have drifted away from racing, or never tried a distance on this table, have a look at how few names are on it. There is more room here than you think.
